We will talk about differences of the subject's age, sex, personality & expression. Instructor Kelly Borsheim will demonstrate, as well as assisting students on an individual basis. Copy a master work (select from one on this page) or bring in a photo of your own to work from.

The wine bar at The Vineyard will be open, if you enjoy tasting great wines while you work.

Participants do not need to have had prior art experience, although some drawing skills will be helpful. Class size is limited, so please enroll early. Details, as well as the supply list, are listed below.

Pastel Portrait Workshop

If you want to learn how to make art, it is helpful to COPY an artwork, instead of a photo. For this class, please choose ONE of the following images and tell the instructor so that she has enough copies during this workshop. However, if you wish to create a portrait from a favorite photo (of your child, grandchild, or other image), please bring it in a copy that is large enough for you to see facial details.

Pastel Workshop Materials List

ALL workshop participants should bring these items:
  • Bulletin board (+ push pins): in a size just large enough to hold your project + your reference photo(s) [approx. 2 (16 x 12" papers] - any board will do (with tape), but Kelly prefers the cork backing and dual-purposes of this surface.
  • Tape -- for holding paper and reference materials (bring even if use bulletin board, masking or blue tape is fine)
  • Reference photos (if not doing a copy from the instructor): see below for details
  • (pastel pencils optional)
  • pencils & notebook (if you want to take your own notes)
  • Carrying case for all materials
  • easel (if you feel more comfortable using your own, Kelly has some; there is a table at the site)
  • Wet-Ones or at least paper towels or a rag (clean your hands)
  • Personal items needed (such as snacks or money for wine)

The following supplies will be provided by the Instructor if the $65 workshop fee is chosen, or bring your own:
  • pastels (Kelly supplies a 64-color kit): see below for details
  • 2 - 3 charcoal sticks (not compressed)
  • Pastel papers/board: see below for details
  • Reference photos: for those doing the copies only
  • rubber, kneadable eraser
  • stomps and/or small sponges (cosmetic sponges on a stick work well) and/or small clean paintbrushes
  • tracing paper -- the size of your drawing board or at least 9" x 12"
  • colored sharpie pen with fine point -- red or blue (other than black)

Details:

  • Pastels: bring what you have or buy a kit with about 30 (minimum) colors in full range. Then add singles of dark greens, red/burgundies, blues, and black. Rembrandt-brand black is the best black -- the most black of all the brands. It is great! You might be surprised with what you can do with a simple MUNGYO Soft Pastel for Artists kit of 64 colors
  • soft vine charcoal -- one stick is plenty. Brand is not important for this workshop, but do not buy COMPRESSED charcoal. Also, I highly recommend supplementing with black pastels (soft pastels are nice for this)
  • Pastel paper or boards: Kelly prefers a sanded surface or a paper made for pastels and charcoal, such as Ampersand's PastelBords, Wallis or Sennelier papers. This is only an 3-hour workshop, so we will use a pastel paper without the sand texture (such as Canson). Also, for a short workshop such as this one, chose a size of image to paint that is small enough for you to make progress and learn, but large enough so that you may see details (such as in the face); 12" x 16" (full image, with face being life-size) could be good
  • Reference Photos: you will chose one for your project during this workout, but bring several if you are unsure what is best suited for this short workshop. Best size = 100% (the same size as) your painting will be. This will allow you to best see the details and also to make corrections as you work. Otherwise, at least make your images 5 x 7 size.
  • Rubber eraser -- the kneadable kind, brand "Design" preferred (grey-coloured)
  • stomps -- optional, but helpful for when your fingers are just too large and you want to blend. Sponges and paintbrushes, cut to blunt stiffer stubs (can cut here if you are nervous about doing it right) are also used for blending
  • Tracing paper - helpful if it is at least the size of your drawing paper or boards

About the Instructor:

Kelly Borsheim has worked as a full-time professional artist since January 2001.

Kelly is an American sculptor who loves to paint and draw. Michelangelo brought her to Italy in 2004 and it was in Florence that she became a "madonnara" (streetpainter). Here she began her exploration with the medium of pastels. In her current body of 2-dimensional work, she combines her classical training from sculpting and her time at the Angel Academy of Art in Florence with her streetpainting: using bright colorful pastels with the subtleties one can express with charcoal.

Kelly currently splits her time between her studio in central Texas and in Florence, Italy. Borsheim art works are in private collections throughout the United States and in Australia, Canada, Italy, France, The Netherlands, the United Kingdom, and New Zealand.
