Materials List for Sculpture Workshop

Updated 24 June 2008: Here is a list of materials for the last workshop I held:
http://www.borsheimarts.com/artclass.htm#materials
What is missing are the hand tools, which you will need. A minimum would be
a hammer -- something that feels good in your hand -- perhaps not too heavy or too light. This is a stone tool hammer, not just a regular hammer.
a 3 or 4 tooth chisel
a flat chisel (est 1/2 inch or maybe wider blade)

Contact my friend Myles if you like. Tell him that you are taking my class. He has been to my home and has supplied many artists with tools. He can advise you on what you will need to carve Texas limestone. This class will focus more on hand tools, but you will get to try out some of my power tools.

In Austin, Texas, we have (had?) a hardware store that catered to our sculpture center (defunct now for many years, hence my hesitation to know whether or not they still stock this stuff). Their name is Breed Hardware and they are located on 29th Street.

Do not worry if you do not get things such as tarp or electric cords. Do not let some stuff stress you out. Most will not be necessary since I am guessing we will have a small class (I got too late a start of publicity). But DO have some visual of a relatively simple shape that you want to carve. If no idea still, then bring magazine pictures or photos (or something) of images that appeal to you.

Thank you again and please contact me if you have other questions.
And you may register online:

Grazie mille,
Kelly

    Sculptors bring:
  • Lunch (and dinner for those who wish to stay); refrigerators and grills available, but bring charcoal and dishes as you require; please label all of your stuff with your name
  • Safety gear: eye goggles (to keep dust and stone chips out of your eyes), gloves, dust masks (for real dust, not the disposable paper ones), ear protection (ear muffs are best, but plugs will work in a pinch).
  • maquette (small sculpture to use as reference for your stone carving. Also helps instructors better understand your idea. We are visual communicators after all.
  • Appropriate clothing, including closed toe shoes. Some people like to carve wearing a bandanna to keep their hair a bit cleaner.
  • any sculpting tools you enjoy using (or have questions about)
  • 50-100 ft. 12-gauge extension cord. Not 16-gauge (it sounds more powerful, but it is not!) This will help get power from the source to your carving site.
  • if you have one: white, brown, or silver tarp -- neutral colors; avoid blue or green -- and ropes or bungie cords to hang it
  • sketch pads for drawing; notepads for recording information from workshop, as desired
  • crayons for marking on stone; pencil or pen for writing; drawing tools you enjoy using
  • Whisk broom for dusting off your sculpture (saves the air compressor for carving use)
  • Measuring tape or stick; calipers and calculator -- whatever you like to use to determine proportion (especially if enlarging)
  • extra clay if you want to experiment with design changes in your maquette
  • lawn chair and/or small table to set your maquette and tools on (sculpting stand for stone is provided)
  • Your camera. Not only will you enjoy documenting your stone sculpture's progress, but you might actually enjoy photographing this event and your new friends!
  • camping gear, as needed. $4.00 per shower. Campers may arrive on site the evening before so that they may set up their camp site and be ready to start work by 9 a.m. the next morning.

Registrants will receive a map and information packet upon registration confirmation.
