I believe that how you spend your money (and your time) is even more important than how you vote (although I am in NO WAY encouraging you to not vote!). Please choose the products you buy with care -- less chemicals (especially in your food!) and less packaging, for starters. The more consumers demand quality, the more likely suppliers are to give it to us. Thank you.
  • Classical Stretch: I discovered this program by accident, but totally love it! Miranda Esmonde-White, the host, is charming and easy to follow as she guides the viewer through a totally do-able and incredibly effective 25 minute workout. If the ClassicalStretch.com link does not work, try: www.wpbstv.org/ClassicalStretch.htm Emphasis is on improving posture and strengthening all the muscles. The stretching routines are done in beautiful locations and as an extra touch, are done to classical music (with titles and artist names shown on the screen).
  • Homegrown (Texas): Judy Barrett of Georgetown, Texas, has put together a wonderful magazine filled with terrific gardening information (mostly specific to Texas)
  • The Nature Conservancy: perhaps the best use of your donations -- they actually buy up land to preserve it! (And sometimes sell it back to caretakers once those folks gain the resources needed.)
  • Center for Marine Conservation: all political boundaries aside, the health of our planet's oceans and the life within affects us all.
  • Rainforest Alliance: RA has issued a "Better Bananas" and "ECO-OK" seals of approval for foods that are grown under strict environmental and social standards, conserve wildlife habitat, recycle or reduce waste, and limit the use of pesticides. This means safer conditions for farmers and better food for us. Foods include bananas, coffee, oranges, and cocoa. Chiquita brand bananas have recently achieved 100% compliance with these standards.
  • Office of Protected Resources: check out the status of your favourite endangered (or already extinct) ocean creatures
  • Zero Population Growth: are you aware of what happens to overpopulated rats in a maze? We have the intellect to control our own growth and how much we choose to (ab)use our Earth!
  • The Cousteau Society: Save our coral reefs!
  • World Wildlife Fund: conservation programs
  • Friends of Animals: fighting off the poaching of African elephants and protecting other wildlife too
  • Austin Habitat for Humanity: these guys are great! They help people who are willing and eager to help themselves and they recycle. You can help by donating time, money, or house-building materials of all types. OR: save on your own home-improvements needs by purchasing supplies at the Habitat Re-store
