Beautiful Floral Design in marble
Sculpture in Genova, Italia

Dear Art Lover,

Happy mid-year! I am back in Austin, Texas, and oh so much to do before I leave again in September. Thank you to all who let me drop in for a visit while I was traveling around the southeast and Midwest US. I have enjoyed seeing and meeting many of my Kickstarter bronze casting project supporters and am happy to say that at least one foundry is being kept quite busy this summer! Sadly, I was unable to see too many people and places despite the miles I drove.

[Two Artists, Two Nights Art Exhibition Austin Texas Invitation]

Before I get started on today’s topic, let me invite you to an event to which I am really looking forward. Shortly after I came to the inescapable conclusion that I had to make art full-time despite my love of many other things, I met an accomplished professional artist, Warren Cullar. He was giving an art marketing lecture in his studio in Austin, sponsored by the Austin Visual Arts Association. Warren really made an impression on me with the generosity in which he shared his professional secrets and love of art. Warren, along with his wife Kitty, became my friends and even collectors of my work. I have pieces by him in my collection as well.

We hatched a plan when he and Kitty visited me in Italy and I am thrilled to announce that we will be showing our very different art styles together in Warren’s studio and garden. He quipped that we should call it “Picasso meets Rembrandt,” but it is certain that he is being generous with me again. In any event, we would LOVE to see you in September.

TWO NIGHTS; TWO DIVERSE ARTISTS: Warren Cullar and Kelly Borsheim

WHEN: 8 & 9 September 2015: 6:30 – 9:30 p.m. each evening
WHERE: Studios of Warren Cullar, Austin, Texas (address provided next time)
WHY? Because this sort of fun does not happen often!

August Art Auctions

[August Art Auction]

After returning to my former studio, I was stunned by how much art I actually left in storage in Texas. Also, I am still looking for a place to settle down. In the meantime, I would like to find homes for some drawings and paintings that I like too much to abandon or paint over [and burning is never a good idea during a Texas summer].

So, during the month of August, I will be posting images of these selected artworks in my Facebook album called “August Art Auction 2015 only”, and then offering them up for auction on eBay, one day at a time. If you like what you see on Facebook [or on my blog], you may contact me directly about the art before it goes on the auction block and we can work something out. This auction will only happen during August.

Marble in Flight: Cemetery Camposanto di Staglieno, Genova, Italia

Thank you for the great response to my previous newsletter when I shared with you many images from the most amazing cemetery that I have seen in Italia, Camposanto di Staglieno in Genova, Italia. Staglieno is so much larger than the cemetery at San Mineato above Firenze (Florence), and carries a different sort of charm.

In this newsletter, I give you images of two of the awe-inspiring qualities of these marble sculptures. The first is the skill these stone carvers from the 1800s and early 1900s had to make a heavy material look so light. Marble angels seem to fly. Fabrics flow and stretch. Extended arms feel as if they are still in motion and fleshy. One half-expects movement at any moment.

The second truly astonishing feat repeated time and again in these sculptures is the incredible attention to detail. The ability to carve subtle things, such as lace, and the faces on coins leaves me with few words. If I could ever carve anything even close to this standard, I would feel . . . no words. I hope you enjoy this series as well.

~ Kelly Borsheim, sculptor

P.S. While some of these images seem to have a solarized effect in the balance between grey and white, do realize that the gray is dirt. The largest outdoor sculpture museum in Europe is in dire need of a proper cleaning and then resealing of the stone for protection.

Stunning! To carve such intricate designs as thin coins with portraits in profiles
on THIN marble... simply awe inspiring.
We seem to have lost so much over the years.

Child's Tombstone: by Vasily Fedorouk

It is horrible to lose a loved one, especially a child. But these horrors happen. Sculpture gets teased sometimes for being the 'art of death' since that seems to be the type of art most used in graveyards. But we DO find it important to remember those we love and to honor their presence in our lives.

My friend and mentor Vasily Fedorouk carved this sleeping toddler angel as a way to try to comfort those who suffer in sadness and wish to think peaceful thoughts.

If his sculpture would help you, please contact Vasily's family via his Web site at vasilyfedorouk.com

Give a Book Review:

Thank you for your interest and support in the book I wrote this past summer about being a street artist in Italy. I was thrilled to receive such glowing feedback about how I had shared not only the art and the artists, but also something of the political environment regarding street art, interaction with the public and other street performers (my favorite chapter is the one in which I have invited children to join me on the pavement), as well as images of the Renaissance City herself.

The book is titled "My Life as a Street Painter in Florence, Italy." If you have read the book and would like to help in the promotion of it, perhaps you would consider writing up a short review for Amazon.com (or even send me a testimonial for my own site). Your review does not have to be fancy. The intention is to help other people get a better idea about what is inside and whether or not they may enjoy the read.
