I painted MaryAnn's profile first--in December 1998. I was not sure what I would compose in the rest of the space, so I left the canvas alone for a few months. One evening when I showed up at my Wednesday night drawing session, Chandra was the model. I was SO excited--we rarely have models who are not Caucasian. I usually bring several canvases to the beginning of a new session. This gives me many options on composition and size and I immediately chose the MaryAnn canvas. At first I thought I would just make a composition of several faces, but as the painting progressed, it took on a life of its own. The lilies? Well I was doing some research on the Internet about language, with a focus on nonverbal communication. At some point I ran across a listing of what the flowers represent and the calla lily represents the beauty of woman (or so this particular Web page said). So I sprinked them in.
