[Woman's legs and stars]

"Genevieve"

28" X 31"
Oil on Masonite

Private Collection

This painting resulted from one of those "happy little accidents". I had sealed the back of the masonite with some white paint after putting gray gesso on the front. Somehow some of the white sealing material landed on the front as dots in the middle of the board. I wasn't worried about it. I figured I would deal with it when I got to the painting. (By that time I had prepared bunches of masonite and I was bored with the task.) Weeks later, I took the board to my life drawing sessions with several others. Once the model, Genevieve, was into the pose, I considered the composition I desired and chose the appropriate board. It happened to be the one with the dots. Since the figure was located in the lower portion of the board, I ignored the dots and intended to sand them off after I got home, taking advantage of painting the model while the session was going on.

Apparently while I was painting, part of my mind was getting comfortable with the dots above the image and later I sanded them out, painted over them, and then added the smaller stars. I was trying to be subtle on the stars--so many people overdo them. I am not even sure if you can see them on your monitor. As with the true night sky, some stars are brighter than others and some have a slight color to them.

August 2000: This painting sold via Teeks Gallery in Wimberley, Texas, so I have no idea who the purchaser was.
