This painting was created from 2 life-drawing sessions with 2 different models and looked like
the image you see to your right. However, a couple of years after creating this painting,
I visited the Museum of Fine Art, Houston. There is a painting in the museum's collection that
reveals how artists sometimes reuse their canvases. The painting is of a man sitting at his desk.
Upside down on the desk top is a face from the original painting. Since oil paint gets transparent
with age, the artist was not aware of how this work would look MANY years after he was gone.
I was enchanted with this idea in the same way a child looks forward to finding the treasure inside
a candy. So I decided to simplify my painting, which I thought had a better composition anyway,
but allowed for the possibility that some people will be able to see the face through the transparent
raw umber pigment. "The Dream" seemed an appropriate title for such a misty, slightly revealing image.
