Dave III (previously titled One Afternoon) is based on a sketch I did of model Dave Larson, probably on the same afternoon that I did the sketch of Praise back in 2001. The image grew on me to the point that I decided to finish the original (to keep for myself) in the raw umber and titanium white tone drawing that I love to paint. But I also wanted to work on creating a larger image and work with the underpainting and coloring techniques some more.
In the image above, you will see the small original canvas on the right. I used this as a reference for creating the larger version on a 30" x 40" canvas. In the image below, you see the enlarged work in progress in my studio after I have applied a marble dust gesso with texture to the highlighted areas. After this was dried and sanded to blend, I then created a Verdacchio underpainting before adding some wonderful skin tones. I had a lot of fun creating the swirling strokes in these elliptical forms. I hope you enjoy viewing this piece.
