Y is based on a sketch I did of Shane, a model who is also an artist. The image on your upper left is the original sketch directly on the canvas. Below that is a detail shot so that you may see the quality/characteristics of sketching in vine charcoal.
The third image shows the work-in-progress after I have used India ink to set my darkest tones.
Why the title Y? I had previously sketched a portrait of Shane and will save the model's name for that work. The first time I exhibited this painting (an exhibit titled From Paper to Bronze: Sculptors Who Draw, I titled it X because of the shapes in the composition.
But 2 days after the opening, I decided that I should not include the pillows in the shape. The figure itself makes a "Y", plus it is the "Y" chromosome, which is responsible for "maleness". I liked the double meaning better. So that is "Y" I did that.
