Above: Robert (detail)

I started this painting Robert on my 39th birthday, July 31, 2003, as a present to myself. I have been wanting to work large for some time now and also to start adding a bit of color -- but not too much -- to my 2-dimensional creations. For a subtle sheen (perhaps I have been fascinated with the body paints lately) and to add a small "surprise" element, I also painted in some metallic colors. Because of this extra touch, I decided to try my hand at learning the frustration and the joys of painting with acrylics. You will see a few more paintings of this sort since I had so much fun with this nude painting.

I love the gentle quietness in the simplicity of the shapes in this painting Robert. If the painting is viewed while rotated 90 degrees, the blue streak looks like a river disappearing into the landscape of the male human form.
