Austin's Sculpture Tradition Continues

Austin, Texas, displays over 100 sculptures throughout the city, as well as being home to two sculpture museums featuring the works of renowned sculptors Elisabet Ney (1833-1907) and Charles Umlauf (1911-1994). Continuing the tradition of 3-dimensional art in Austin are artists Marian Waldrip and Kelly Borsheim, two of the city's contemporary talents in figurative sculpture.

A special exhibit in July 2002 by Marian and Kelly is entitled "From Paper to Bronze: Sculptors Who Draw". While exhibiting their work, both artists have received many questions from the public about how works are sculpted and how they have been able to create such lively figures. "From Paper to Bronze" will give the public insight into how classically trained sculptors hone their craft by featuring figurative drawings, paintings, sculpture, and works-in-progress.

One evening a week after the exhibit opens, on July 9th, Marian and Kelly will do a live demonstration for the public of drawing from a (clothed) model. Also included in the show are displays on the "lost wax" bronze casting process and the steps involved in turning a sketch into a 3-dimensional work of art. All facets of this exhibit will be educational for the aspiring artist, as well as the collector of fine art.

Artists' Reception, 2 July 2002

Unusual for Texas this time of year, rain flooded most of the hill country and central Texas on July 1-2 (following days of sporadic thunderstorms). However, the rain began to let up in early afternoon (at least at the gallery location). The Parks and Recreation folks pumped water out of the parking lot for guests. Although both Marian and Kelly received e-mails and calls from many people who could not access roads in Austin and nearby communities because of high water, there was still an amazing amount of visitors on opening night. According to the gallery director, "From Paper to Bronze" had one of the better turnout numbers than most of the other exhibits' opening receptions. Thank you, Austin!

Life Drawing Demonstration, 9 July 2002

It poured rain tonight, too, although for a shorter period! Marian and I drew model Shane. We first did several 2-minute sketches and then moved on to a 15-minute pose, then two 30-minute poses. Marian drew in ink, while I first sketched in charcoal and then, for the last drawing, painted in oils. Some images of the evening are below.
