This sculpture was carved from a 46-pound piece of Colorado alabaster. There was red clay and a green stone (that I have not identified) imbedded throughout half of the piece. Also, on the back side, there were these marvelous protrusions of stone that looked to me like coral and I chose to leave this section of stone alone. On the upper "fin" I washed out as much of the red clay as I could, leaving a crevice of rock, which I chose not to fill. I much prefer the natural alabaster stone to anything I could have done to "fix" these formations, as some sculptors may have chosen to do. I love the uniqueness of this sculpture. This piece sold the first time it was publicly exhibited as a completed work. |
