Stone Workshop Extra Details . . .

Potluck dinners each night are another great opportunity to hang out with the instructors and other carvers and learn more. Even non-camping participants are invited to these informal gatherings after work hours.

Workshop (carving) hours will be approximately 9 a.m. to 5 or 6 p.m. (compressors will be on for about 8 hours per day, shut down for lunch).

Beginners are invited and encouraged to attend, although some experience with art or sculpture is helpful. This is a very laid-back environment in which you will learn a lot about stone and art.

No dogs or other animals may be brought to the site. Workshop participants may camp on the 10-acre wooded property, but fires will be restricted to certain areas and may not be allowed under certain circumstances.

Also, guests and other sculptors are invited to visit and photograph artists at work (unless the artist says no). I only hope that they will use good taste -- if they stay for a lecture, throw a little money into the pot to pay my visiting instructors. Visitors are also encouraged to buy tools and stone from Myles Schachter. However, only workshop participants may try out selected tools.

Location: 10-acre home studio of Kelly Borsheim, Cedar Creek, Texas 78612.
Registered participants will receive a map. (Visitors should call and inquire.) Studio is approximately 20 miles southeast of the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in Central Texas.

Please help spread the word.
Thanks,
Kelly Borsheim

About the Stone Carving Instructors

[Stone Carving Workshop] Chicago-based, Ukrainian-born and trained Master Sculptor Vasily Fedorouk has been working as a sculptor since 1977. His works have been exhibited internationally and are in private collections in the USA, Ukraine, Russia, Yugoslavia, Belgium, Brazil, Norway, Korea and Israel. Several of his sculptures are in the permanent collections of museums in Ukraine and Russia. He has created many public works around the world, including one for a symposium in Brazil in which he carved a 10-foot marble sculpture of two figures -- in three weeks! Vasily was an invited guest to the Seattle 1990 Goodwill Games, which led to his move to the United States. For more information about Vasily and his work, please visit his Web site: vasilyfedorouk.com.

Myles Schachter is a sculptor working in limestone, marble and bronze. He has stone carving and metal-working training and extensive teaching experience. His most recent interest is in modern representation of ancient Asian and Mayan sculpture. Myles also conducts an annual limestone carving workshop at his Kansas studio. Myles' info. is online at: www.2sculpt.com.

[woman marble sculpture star watch art] Sculptor Kelly Borsheim, a full-time artist since January 2001, will act as host and teaching assistant. View her stone work on this site at: www.borsheimarts.com/sculpture/stone.htm

Materials List for Sculpture Workshop

    Sculptors bring:
  • Lunch (and dinner for those who wish to stay); refrigerators and grills available, but bring charcoal and dishes as you require; please label all of your stuff with your name
  • Safety gear: eye goggles (to keep dust and stone chips out of your eyes), gloves, dust masks (for real dust, not the disposable paper ones), ear protection (ear muffs are best, but plugs will work in a pinch).
  • maquette (small sculpture to use as reference for your stone carving. Also helps instructors better understand your idea. We are visual communicators after all.
  • Appropriate clothing, including closed toe shoes. Some people like to carve wearing a bandanna to keep their hair a bit cleaner.
  • any sculpting tools you enjoy using (or have questions about); Myles will bring most tools you will need, but he will be selling them, for the most part. Demo tools are first-come, first served, sharing as much as possible.
  • 50-100 ft. 12-gauge extension cord. Not 16-gauge (it sounds more powerful, but it is not!) This will help get power from the source to your carving site.
  • if you have one: white, brown, or silver tarp -- neutral colors; avoid blue or green -- and ropes or bungie cords to hang it
  • sketch pads for drawing; notepads for recording information from workshop, as desired
  • crayons for marking on stone; pencil or pen for writing; drawing tools you enjoy using
  • Whisk broom for dusting off your sculpture (saves the air compressor for carving use)
  • Measuring tape or stick; calipers and calculator -- whatever you like to use to determine proportion (especially if enlarging)
  • extra clay if you want to experiment with design changes in your maquette
  • lawn chair and/or small table to set your maquette and tools on (sculpting stand for stone is provided)
  • Your camera. Not only will you enjoy documenting your stone sculpture's progress, but you might actually enjoy photographing this event and your new friends!
  • camping gear, as needed. $4.00 per shower. Campers may arrive on site the evening before so that they may set up their camp site and be ready to start work by 9 a.m. the next morning.

Registrants will receive a map and information packet upon registration confirmation.
